Megami-sama.net Shopping Guide
I'll admit, I'm a shopaholic. I've spent a lot of my money on Goddess manga, artbooks, DVDs, CDs, and other collectibles over the years. And I've had a lot of experience bargain-hunting online. So here are my tips and recommendations for ways that you can expand your Goddess collection without going broke: The best places to buy new, discounted, and used merchandise, as well as online stores that you can use even if you don't have a credit card. (Yes, I was an online shopping addict years before I ever got my first credit card!)
Japanese manga, artbooks, and magazines
The following sites carry Japanese manga and manga artbooks as listed on this page, as well as artbooks for the various Goddess anime, and import anime magazines like you can find scanned at Visions of Goddess.
- Sasuga Books
Japanese manga, magazines, artbooks, and more. Site is in English, and they ship internationally. You do not need a credit card. - Amazon.co.jp
Japanese manga, artbooks, and more. Site is in Japanese, and they ship internationally. I'm pretty sure that you need a credit card for this one. I think there might be a way for overseas customers to pay with an international money order, but I have yet to figure out how. - Animebooks.com
Japanese manga, magazines, artbooks, and more. Site is in English, and they ship internationally. You must use a credit card or Paypal to pay. Free shipping on domestic orders over $25 (for manga) or $100 (for other stuff). - JP Queen
Japanese manga, magazines, artbooks, doujinshi, and more. Most of the items sold on this site are gently used, and cheap! Site is in English, and they ship internationally. You do not need a credit card. - CD Japan
Offers 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month subscriptions to popular anime magazines such as Animedia, Animage, and Newtype. You do not need a credit card. - Gamers USA
An awesome selection of all sorts of different Goddess merchandise, including imported manga and artbooks. You need a credit card or Paypal to order from this site.
Buying English manga
It's easy to buy cheap copies of the Oh My Goddess! manga in English. Check your local bookstores and comic book stores first, or try buying online:
- Amazon.com
Skip the new copies, and look for discounted and used copies from the zShops. You'll find manga in great condition for $2-$3 per volume. You do not need a credit card. - Barnes and Noble.com
Again, search directly for used copies, and you'll find manga for as low as $1-$2 each. Again, you do not need a credit card. - JustManga.com
The best and lowest prices for new manga that I've been able to find. You do not need a credit card.
Renting the Anime
Yes, anime DVDs can be expensive! That's why it might be a good idea to rent and watch the various Goddess anime before you make the plunge and buy. Here are some online rental services that carry the Goddess movie, OAV, and TV series:
Downloading the Anime
As of this writing, ADV Films is currently offering Sorezore no Tsubasa episode downloads on their website. The episodes are DUB ONLY. You can visit the ADV Films homepage to download the episodes. I'm not going to directly link to the download page because the URL keeps changing, like, every week.
Buying R1 (North American) DVDs
Looking for the anime? Look no further! First, if you live near a mall, look for anime DVDs at a Suncoast or Sam Goody store. If the DVDs aren't available on the shelves, just ask an employee to order them for you. Best Buy, WalMart, K-Mart, Target, and other megastores often stock anime DVDs, too. If you'd rather order online, however...
- DeepDiscountDVD.com
Goddess DVDs are at least $10 (if not more) cheaper than the suggested retail price. You must have a credit card to order from this site, though. - DVD Price Search
Compares prices across many major online stores, so that you can always find the cheapest price for any given DVD.
Buying R2 (Japanese) DVDs
Wanna import? That's your choice. Be advised, however: Japanese DVDs do NOT come with English subtitles. Also, they WILL NOT play on a North American DVD player. (You will need to buy a Region 2 or a Region-Free DVD player to be able to watch Japanese DVDs.) Finally, Japanese DVDs are expensive! One volume of the Ah! My Goddess TV series costs about $60 and will only get you three episodes. And that's only in Japanese, without subtitles or a dub track, either. Compared to that, the North American Ah! My Goddess TV series DVDs cost $30 at most and comes with four episodes, which you can watch raw, subtitled, or dubbed. Since any and all versions of Goddess anime are available on North American DVD, be sure that you're only buying a Japanese DVD if you really, really want to. Anyway, if you're hardcore enough to want them, here are places where you can buy import DVDs:
- CD Japan
No, they don't offer discounts. Yes, that shipping cost can be a b*tch. But this is still the best English-language site to buy DVDs direct from Japan. Most importantly, this site will let you know if first-press editions are still available of any given DVD. You do not need a credit card to order from this site. - YesAsia
If it exists, it's here. CDs and DVDs and manga and goodies and more, from both Japan and North America, often offered at a significant discount. Free international shipping for orders over a certain amount (which varies from country to country). You do not need a credit card. - Anime Jungle
Used DVDs for cheap! And the site is in English. You will have to patient, however. It usually takes a while for recent, new anime series to show up on this site. You do not need a credit card.
Buying Goddess CDs
Music! Drama! Music and drama! Here are some places where you can buy Goddess music and drama CDs, whether imported or domestic:
- Amazon.com
Lists both domestic and import CDs from individual sellers. Grab a used copy if you can: they tend to be much cheaper than new. You do not need a credit card. - CD Japan
The most complete selection of import Goddess CDs, including the older, out-of-print albums.
Also offers a wide selection of used CDs. This would be a good place to look for the older soundtracks and drama albums. You do not need a credit card.
Other Goddess Goodies
- Animeten.com
Goddess collectibles up the wazoo. This site carries most of the newest stuff from Japan, so it's great for TV-series collectibles. - Akadot Retail
Some figurines and other collectibles. Mostly DVDs and manga, though. - Anime Collectibles
Man, this site has been around since I was in high school! A great and reliable source of toys and collectibles. - Atamaii.com
A small selection of rare collectibles and merchandise. - Gamers USA
An awesome selection of all sorts of different Goddess merchandise. - YesAsia
