Mara's Tools
Mara is certainly no Skuld, but she does use a few very cool pieces of demonic machinery in the course of the manga. Like the Goddesses, Mara demonstrates that she possesses a deep knowledge of chemistry, physics, and engineering; this can be seen in the way that she often "grows" her own servants in a laboratory-like setting, and in the way that she occasionally uses a futuristic-looking contraption or two in order to further her evil plots. Here is a short list of the machines, and the magical devices, that Mara uses in manga.
Portable Television.
Mara uses this small "Zony" brand television to spy on Keiichi and Belldandy. She can watch what they are doing on the TV's screen. It's a neat little toy, but Mara only ever uses it once in the manga. Later on, most of her neccessary spying is accomplished either by her spy demon, or when she shrinks herself and sneaks around in her chibi form.
Balance Indicator.
A crystal ball with a pair of scales in it, this device acts as an indicator of the balance of Keiichi's heart, although Mara is able to use it to "shift" his balance and control his emotions. Mara shifts the balances and causes Keiichi to become attracted to Sayoko instead of Belldandy. When Keiichi finally musters up his will and breaks free of Mara's control, the glass ball and scales shatter.
Personality Separation Precipitator.
Mara uses this device to do the "impossible," that is, to separate Urd's demon half from her Goddess half (something that even the Almighty was unable to do). She claims that she bought the device from the Acme Novelty Supply Company. Later, Mara loans the machine to the Goddesses so that they can use it to recombine Urd's separate halves.
Listening Device (un-named).
This machine acts as a receptor that allows Mara to pick up on, and hear, Sayoko's wish in chapter 81. I guess it's almost like some sort of portable psychic radio. Mara listens to it by plugging one headphone into her ear, so in that sense, it looks even more like a Walkman radio.
Soujinki.
"Soujinki" is written with the kanji characters "Sweep-Gods-Demon," and is a pun on the word soujiki, which means "vacuum cleaner." It looks like a cross between a teapot and Aladdin's magic lamp, and Hild even calls it a "lamp." If a person puts his or her mouth on the Soujinki's spout, he or she will be sucked into the inside. The Soujinki releases its victims if hot water is poured on it, and it is rubbed three times. Mara plans to use the Soujinki to trap the Goddesses; however, Hild asks the practical question, "Who would put their mouth on something like this?" So Hild improves the device by enchanting it, so that whoever is looking at it will see it take the shape of something irresistibly cute, lovable, and kissable.
