Working girl - a shrine to the demon Mara.

Mara's Powers

Being an immortal demon does come with its perks. Mara was born in Hell and, probably just like her counterpart Goddesses, normally exists as a ten-dimensional being. While she manifests herself on Earth, Mara generates her body as a three-dimensional form. However, just because she uses a human form doesn't mean that Mara is limited to human abilities; despite her distance from Hell, Mara exhibits just as impressive an array of supernatural powers as the Goddesses do. Here is a fairly comprehensive list of all of the powers and abilities that Mara uses in the manga.

Teleportation.
This power appears to be basic to all demons and Goddesses. Mara demonstrates the ability to instantaneously teleport in numerous chapters, including her introductory story, chapter 26. Unlike the Goddesses, who need to use a special medium like a mirror or a television screen, Mara apparently needs no medium to teleport.

Flight.
Unlike Belldandy and Urd, who fly with the aid of a magic broomstick or wings, Mara simply flies under her own power, a lá Superman. She flies in most of the chapters that she appears in.

Telekinesis.
Mara quite frequently uses telekinesis to levitate herself, and later uses what looks like telekinetic blasts to forcefully push people away from her (as in chapters 31, 83, 85).

Telepathy.
Another basic, elementary power. In chapter 81, Mara speaks directly to Sayoko's mind.

Contract.
This is probably one of Mara's most important powers, but the one that we see her use the least often. The same way that a Goddess can create a binding contract with a mortal, demons also can sign binding contracts with mortal humans, although they always require that the human offer some compensation in return (such as their soul). In chapter 81, Mara signs a contract with Sayoko, and gives her the power to use her mind-force waves to alter reality. Sayoko refuses to sell her soul, but she does agree to uphold some unspecified end of the bargain. In chapter 84, Mara mentions the contract when she forcefully reminds Sayoko that she cannot end her fantasy of being a queen, and cannot stop the use of her new powers, without Mara's permission. Then Mara finally demands that Sayoko fulfill her end of the contract, and use her newfound powers to order Belldandy to go home. "Do that, and you can be queen forever and ever," Mara tells Sayoko. When Sayoko refuses to do so, Mara invokes the power of the contract to enforce her will. "A contract is a contract! And I, Mara, demon first-class, am now duly empowered by this breach of contract, to employ force in the execution thereof!" Mara then touches the back of Sayoko's neck and forces her to say the words, "Go home, Belldandy! Back where you belong!"

Transformation.
Mara transforms Keiichi into a lizard (chapter 26) and Megumi into a car (chapter 29). She also transforms the Earth Spirit in Megumi's apartment into a stuffed animal (chapter 45), and transforms some household rats into miniature human ninja (chapter 52).

Extra-Sensory Perception.
Mara can sense the "waves" particular to Belldandy and the other Goddesses when they are near (chapter 26). Also, she is capable of shielding her own thoughts from the Goddesses (chapter 45).

Mind Control.
Mara first compels Tamiya to buy the Demons CD. Later, she manipulates Keiichi into saying that he'd rather go out with Sayoko than stay with Belldandy (chapter 28).

Spellcasting.
Like the Goddesses, Mara can use simple chants and incantations to affect the physical world around her, mostly by causing inanimate objects to move. For example, she recites a spell to send a loaded cargo truck rolling after Keiichi (chapter 28). She also puts a sealing spell on one of Banpei's levers that prevents Skuld from pulling it (chapter 47), and recites the "curse of the demon headphones" to prevent Urd from removing a pair of headphones from her head (chapter 61).

Molecular Manipulation (Clothing Creation).
Also like the Goddesses, Mara creates, dissolves, and recreates her clothing at the molecular level, merely with the force of her will (chapter 29).

Servant Creation.
Several of Mara's servants are "home-grown," so to speak. It looks as though she incubates her booster demons, and later her tiny ninja servants, in her own laboratory equipment (chapters 29 and 52). She also grows a clone of Urd with her own equipment (chapter 61). Basically, Mara can create and give life to own servant creatures.

"Mara Pyramid Power Boost!"
Mara uses five booster demons to form a pyramid-shaped shield around her. The shield protects her from the effects of the good luck charms surrounding Keiichi's house, and also deflects the spells that Belldandy uses to attack her with (chapter 31).

Summoning.
Mara awakens the Lord of Terror and summons her to her side, by speaking to the ancient cursed urn, Mao Za Haxon (chapter 34).

Sealing.
Mara demonstrates several times that she is capable of sealing another being, whether human or Goddess. Unfortunately, the first time that the attempts to seal up Belldandy's power, she ends up accidentally sealing Keiichi into a crystal ball instead (chapter 35). Later, in chapter 45, Mara manages to silently suppress Belldandy's power, locking away her abilities. Belldandy doesn't even notice, until she tries to cast a simple spell and finds herself unable to do so.

Imprisonment Program.
Similar to a seal, Mara has the ability to execute a powerful imprisonment program, which has to be calibrated to the specific characteristics each victim. When she uses such a program to incapacitate Urd, the program manifests as a pair of handcuffs (chapter 61). However, when Urd's demon half is ripped out of her, her characteristics change (she is now pure Goddess), and the program "crashes," causing the handcuffs to break.

Possession.
Mara can possess a human host, such as when she possesses the body of Megumi Morisato (chapter 45).

Chibi-Mara.
Like the Goddesses, Mara can transform her body into a tiny, chibi version of herself (chapters 47, 140). However, unlike the Goddesses or Hild, Mara never gives any indication that she can "split" herself into multiple copies of her tiny self.

"Hellfire Thunder Blast!"
Similar to Urd's lightning bolts, this seems to be Mara's offensive attack spell (chapter 60).
